KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are searching for the person who robbed two Kansas City Zoo employees at gunpoint.

The robbery happened about 5:45 p.m. Sunday. The zoo closed at 5 p.m. The employees were picking up money from different areas of the park when a man approached them, police said.

The suspect pointed a silver handgun at them and took an undisclosed amount of money. The zoo employees were not hurt. An unarmed security guard was with the zoo employees.

Authorities said the suspect was last seen running from the area.

Police used a dog and a helicopter to search for the attacker but couldn't find him.

The suspect was described as a black man, approximately 5'11" to 6'2", medium build, wearing a blue or black Kansas City baseball cap, bright orange or red sunglasses, a red bandana, gray hooded sweatshirt and black or dark blue sweat pants.

Capt. Steve Young, spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said this robbery was "pretty uncommon."

While surveillance cameras are placed throughout the park, this crime was not caught on camera. Zoo officials declined to comment on whether this was an inside job by a current or former employee with knowledge of money procedures, citing the ongoing investigation.

Detectives continue to talk to witnesses.

"There's always somebody out there that knows something," Young said. "And of course, if somebody knows something and wants to call the TIPS Hotline, that's always a huge help as well."

Anyone with information is urged to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
