Three men were taken to area hospitals after a minivan went up in flames Monday morning after it slammed into a house on the city's south side.
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
It was a scary scene in one Kansas City neighborhood Monday morning after a minivan crashed into a house, causing an explosion and hurting three people.
Police say the minivan was driving north on Wornall Road just before 6:30 a.m. when it passed 101st Terrace.
The driver lost control, slid sideways through the side yard of a house and continued skidding sideways about 200 feet before smashing into the garage of the home in the 400 block of West 101st Street, which is near 101st Street and Wornall Road.
Three people were inside the home when the minivan crashed into it.
One of those residents, Brandi Pinon, who lives with her grandparents said the crash woke them up, and then she heard her grandfather yelling.
"It was crazy," she said. "My grandfather was yelling. I came out to see what was going on."
Pinon said she opened the garage door, smelled smoke and rubber, so she shut the door quickly and tried to call 911.
Pinon, her grandmother and their dog got out quickly. When she stepped outside, she saw the minivan on fire. Then they discovered the couldn't find her grandfather, and that frightened her.
One of the occupants in the minivan found her grandfather and helped rescue him.
"He passed out next to the garage. I helped carry him across the street. It was like five minutes after that the car exploded and then there were several explosions after that. We keep oxygen (tanks) in there, and it was just crazy," Pinon said.
Nicholas Reed who works nearby said that explosion was very loud and sent him ducking for cover.
"It was a very large explosion. Just loud," Larry Hoffman, a neighbor, said.
Police say the grandfather, and the two men driving the minivan, were all taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The homeowner suffered a brain injury as well as a broken toe. He remains hospitalized.
Police say the home is a total loss and are investigating whether alcohol may have contributed to the crash. Sgt. Bill Mahoney said clearly speed was an issue based on how far the vehicle slid.
Vehicles have crashed through fences in the neighborhood before but this is the first time a crash destroyed a home.
"This road is terrible," Pinon said.
She and her grandparents are now struggling after so much fire and smoke damage to their belongings.
"We pretty much lost everything," she said.
The family was renting and is now staying with other family members. The landlord plans to rebuild.
