Faces of Kansas City: Senior Citizens example of 'you're only as old as you feel'

Posted: Updated:

A couple of senior citizens are prime examples of the phrase "you're only as old as you feel."

Every week, Wayne and Faye Stevens load up into their car and make a trip to the Lee's Summit Medical Center. This is where the couple gets their meals. In addition to the food the hospital serves its patients, it also provides free meals to people who qualify for Meals on Wheels.

That's where Wayne and Faye come in. The meals aren't for them - they volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Every Friday, the Stevens make their rounds delivering hot food to people who count on them.

"I don't know what I'd do without them. At my age cooking is not, well, I don't do it," Virginia Marousek of Lee's Summit, MO, said.

Marousek looks forward to Wayne's weekly visits.

"Oh yeah, he's friendly and he's always got a smile," Marousek said.

The irony in all of this is that Wayne, at 94 years young, is older than everyone he delivers to.

"I ask ‘em when they was born and they tell me and they ask when was you born and when I tell 'em 5-6-18 they just kind of wilt," Wayne said with a laugh.

For those who may have thought that Wayne misspoke, he was born in 1918. His wife Faye is a mere 88-years-old. She loves volunteering for Meals on Wheels.

"They always smell so good, I don't know what they are, but they always smell so good," Faye said, admitting that the meals make her hungry while out on the rounds.

It takes the Stevens about an hour to make their deliveries - sometimes a bit longer.

"Faye gets mad at me because I stop and talk to these people. She gets a little upset because I spend too much time, but I tell her I may be the only person these people get to talk to," Wayne said.

The visits may be brief, but it's the good will behind them that makes a difference.

"A little bit, a whole bunch. I need quite a bit of help so I appreciate that," one woman said about the deliveries making her life easier.

"At Christmas time I make a lot of candy and give the little ladies candy and Wayne gives the little ladies candy and cookies," Faye said.

The Stevens said volunteering and staying active keeps them young and they should know what works - they've been married for more than seven decades.

"Don't go to bed mad at each other, get in bed and kiss, tell 'em good night," Wayne said after being asked if there's a key to their 71 years of married success.
