Fans, drivers ready for weekend of racing

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

NASCAR comes to Kansas City this weekend with some major races.

The races bring in 100,000 fans, 43 drivers, all for one big party at the Kansas Speedway and it sounds like the newly re-paved track may steal the show.

The cars racing hit speeds upwards of 180 miles per hour and sometimes that means bad news with a bad surface. But the buzz Friday morning was the excitement behind a new surface and increasing banking in the turns on the Speedway's track. Also new this year is an added infield road course that winds drivers through the infield.

All of the changes are part of the Speedway's improvements crews started in April.

Racecar driver Ryan Newman said he is excited for the new surface.

"It's like having a car, getting a new set of tires and you have 10,000 miles left. There was still life left in the race track, but in the end you still have new tires. It's fast," Newman said.

All the race weekend festivities and more than 100,000 fans also means a boost for the local economy.

Any fans interesting in coming out to see the races and the resurfaced track can purchase tickets on the Kansas Speedway website.

Gates opened at the Kansas Speedway at 8 a.m. Friday and will do the same Saturday and Sunday. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Qualifying is at 4:10 p.m. and the ARCA Kansas Lottery 98.9 Race is at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday the NASCAR Nationwide Series Kansas Lottery 300 Race is at 2:30 p.m. and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Hollywood Casino 400 Race is at 1 p.m. Sunday.
