KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are trying to find the person who shot and killed a man in a wheelchair.

The deadly shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in an apartment near 23rd Street and Topping Avenue.

Witnesses to police that they heard multiple shots then heard voices outside the victim's apartment.

Dontae Winn, 25, was confined to a wheelchair because he was paralyzed during a shooting in 2009. Neighbors said he was helpless to defend himself.

"He's a very wonderful young man," Essie Wilson said, adding she often cooked meals for him and her husband would bring him outside so he could enjoy fresh air. "We've been knowing him a long time. He was just a sweetheart. This really hurts my heart.

Wilson said she heard four shots but didn't call police.

"We hear shots all the time so we just ignore it and paid it no attention," Wilson said.

Winn had told Wilson that he feared those responsible for his shooting in 2009 would target him again.

Wilson said Winn told her, "I don't let people know where I am because they could be after me."

Because there was no sign of forced entry, Wilson believes Winn let his killer in and that it was someone he trusted.

Winn is survived by a 5-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter.

A suspect description has not been released.

If anyone knows anything that can help police make an arrest, they are urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
