Burned woman's mother thanks firefighters for saving daughter

RAYTOWN, MO (KCTV) -

Lisa Smallwood was unconscious and flames were shooting around her prone body, but several Raytown firefighters dashed in to save her life on Sept. 29.

She faces a long recovery at the University of Kansas Hospital after 30 percent of her body was burned. But she can recover because of those firefighters.

On Tuesday, Smallwood's mother, Bobbie Tate, thanked firefighters David Andrews, Darren Summers and Keith Smith.

Summers and Andrews pulled Smallwood from the flames while Smith manned the truck and kept the water flowing.

Tate, a minister, said she is grateful to the firefighters and appreciates their passion for their work. She said she could also feel in her heart how they cared about her daughter's welfare and future.

"It's nice to know that the stuff we do does work," Smith said. "It's just nice to know that what we do matters."

A fund has been set up for Smallwood. Donations may be made at any area Blue Ridge Bank & Trust.

Two of the three firefighters were among nine Raytown firefighters whose jobs were saved recently by a $1.2 million federal grant.
