Suspect shot by police officer in Kansas City, Kansas

Posted: Updated:

What happened outside one woman's window looked more like something someone would see unfold in an action movie after an officer shot a driver he says tried to run him over.

The suspect was shot about 4:45 p.m. Monday at 10th Street and Gilmore Avenue. The man was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.

Authorities said two officers in a patrol car attempted to stop the driver of a white pickup for a traffic violation.  The officers excited the vehicle, and the driver twice tried to back up into the parked patrol car, police said.

Shots were fired at the driver after he pointed a gun at the officers, authorities said. One of the officers fired back.

"The car was blocking the officer who got out on the passenger side," Officer Patrick McCallop said. "The vehicle backed toward him, and that's when he began to fire."

Karina Zamarron said the suspect was apparently shot in the neck.

"I was in the living room and then all we heard were gunshots. We waited until the police came and then we came over here," Zamarron said, adding officers couldn't get the man out of the vehicle initially. "He was in the car when he got shot."

The two officers have been placed on routine administrative leave as the case is investigated.

The shooting happened near Whittiter Elementary School, but classes had already been dismissed for the day.
