PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A Sun City woman was sentenced to three years supervised probation after she pleaded guilty to one count of vulnerable adult abuse for handcuffing her diapered 87-year-old uncle to his soiled bed.
Tara Bergland-Hugo Rothlisberg, 56, was sentenced by Judge Joseph Kreamer on Monday and will serve the probation with mental health terms and conditions. She is also prohibited from ever working as a caregiver again.
Rothlisberg was arrested May 31 after a solar panel installer noticed a foul odor coming from her home. Chris Van Raalte called the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and deputies later found the 87-year-old man dressed only in a soiled adult diaper and laying on soiled sheets.
Rothlisberg was originally charged with two counts of elder and child abuse, but pleaded guilty in August to the long count.
Compounding the deplorable conditions in Rothlisberg's home was an accumulation of trash and feces from the nine cats and four dogs also living in the house. Deputies said the summertime temperature in all but one room of the house was more than 90 degrees. Only Rothlisberg's room was cooler because of a working air conditioner.
Rothlisberg admitted to deputies that she had handcuffed her uncle, and said it was suggested by her 88-year-old mother because the uncle would often fall.
Rothlisberg's 14-year-old daughter was also living in the home, and was turned over the Child Protective Services.
