The family members of a motorcycle rider are hoping for an apology for the woman who they say abandoned their loved one after a debilitating crash.
Justin Loring is lucky to be alive after he wrecked his motorcycle. His leg was so injured that he will have to walk with a cane now.
A woman jumped a curb Saturday morning as she was leaving a gas station at Eighth and Prospect Avenue. Surveillance video from the gas station shows the woman exiting south onto Prospect where she jumps the curb and turns into Loring's path.
"Justin told me a car pulled out in front of him. He said, 'Aunt Martha, I had a choice whether to hit her or lay down the bike down so I laid the bike down. I didn't want to hurt no one,'" Martha Crutcher, the injured man's aunt, said in an interview with KCTV5.
The driver left the scene. Police said she dropped off a toddler in the vehicle at a home near Ninth Street and Olive Avenue. The woman returned to the scene after dropping off the toddler.
Crutcher has watched the video. She said it hurts to see someone act so cavalierly without a thought for life.
"To actually see someone not even put their break light on, not even stop," she said. "I can't explain it. It hurts."
Loring's family doesn't believe the woman has taken enough responsibility for the crash and want an apology for leaving him prone after the crash. The family also want police to answer their questions and more aggressively pursue a case against the driver.
Crutcher also said the family wants to use their experience as a caution to others to keep a close watch out for motorcycle riders and pedestrians.
"It makes my heart very heavy to know there are people like that out there that would rather just walk away than make sure a person is OK," she said. "You don't even treat dogs like that."
She called on more responsibility from the driving public.
"If you hit someone whether it's a car or a bike, stop. That was my biggest thing is the total disregard for life," she said.
Loring remains hospitalized at Truman Medical Center. He turned 27 years old on Sunday.
