GRANDVIEW, MO (KCTV) -

Firefighters battled a fire at chemical plant Tuesday morning.

Crews arrived on the scene about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at Caravan Ingredients, located in the 13800 block of Botts Road, after smoke was reported coming from the building.  The plant produces a food additive.

Grandview Fire Marshal Jim Wilson said the fire started in a rotating dryer drum.  He believes a filter caught fire which led to smoke filling the area. The dryer drum is reported to be about 3 feet in diameter.

Initial crews were called for back up as a precaution, but crews ended up having the fire out before others arrived.

Firefighters didn't use water to put the fire out because of the expensive equipment inside the building, in addition to electrical problems.

Wilson estimates damages to be about $50,000. He said his crews are in the process of moving the machine outside.

No injuries were reported.
