KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
One person was taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon following a house fire.
Crews responded to the fire at a home near 66th Street and Broadway Avenue just before noon. Officials said the fire started in the basement and may have been sparked by a space heater.
One person who was helping get everyone else out of the home was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Two other people were assessed at the scene.
The fire is still under investigation.
National Fire Safety Week kicked off this weekend. Fire departments are re-emphasizing the need for smoke alarms and making sure people have an escape plan in place.
The Overland Park Fire Department held its annual fire safety open house early in the day Saturday, but those who missed it can always check out their website for more information and videos on fire safety.
