LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV/AP) -
Charlie Weis wanted to give his team a lesson in the Sunflower Showdown ahead of his first game against Kansas State, so the new Kansas coach figured he'd better bone up on it himself.
He read about the recent history, too.
While Kansas owns a decisive advantage in a series that stretches to 1902, the Wildcats have dominated it for more than two decades, ever since the arrival of Bill Snyder in Manhattan prior to the 1989 season. There was a stretch of 11 straight victories, and currently three in a row.
Most people don't figure the outcome Saturday will be much different.
The seventh-ranked Wildcats (4-0) are rolling after beating Oklahoma on the road two weeks ago, while the Jayhawks (1-3) have blown two fourth-quarter leads this season.
Weis also used his Twitter account to sound off about coverage of his team in KU's student newspaper, the University Daily Kansan. The newspaper featured Willie the Wildcat about to crush a beleaguered Jayhawk in an article called, "Road Kill Ahead."
"Team slammed by our school newspaper," Weis wrote. "Amazing! No problem with opponents paper or local media. You deserve that you get! But, not home!"
He said his role as coach is to defend his players.
"I personally could care less (about the article). You are what (sic) are," he wrote in a tweet. "On the other hand, if I don't support the players good or bad, who will??"
As of Friday night, Weis hasn't tweeted again since Thursday.
The Jayhawks are 24-pount underdogs to K-State, which has won three straight games in the Sunflower Showdown. Snyder has won 16 of 20 games against KU and only lost once at Manhattan, Weiss said.
