Ex-NFL star Larry Johnson has been arrested in Las Vegas for allegedly strangling a former girlfriend at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers were called Friday morning to the Bellagio, where security officers had detained Johnson, 32.

Officers determined that Johnson had met a former girlfriend at the resort. According to Metro, the meeting turned into a physical altercation between Johnson and the 32-year-old woman.

Johnson suffered what police described as "small scratches" on his face. The alleged victim suffered multiple facial injuries and bruising on her neck.

Based on the the woman's injuries, Johnson was arreasted for battery domestic violence-strangulation, and taken into police custody.

Johnson is eligible to post bail of $15,000 after a state-mandated dentention of at least 15 hours. He's scheduled to appear in court on Saturday at 7:30 a.m.

Johnson hasn't played in the NFL since 2011 when he was released by the Miami Dolphins.

Most of Johnson's NFL career was spent playing in Kansas City for the Chiefs. He and the Chiefs parted ways in 2008 after Johnson made clear his unhappiness with the team and then-coach Todd Haley. The final straw was when he posted a gay slur on his Twitter account.

Johnson twice made the Pro Bowl for the Chiefs.  His running back play was often brilliant, but he could be lazy when it came to blocking. He rushed for 6,223 yards with the Chiefs for 55 touchdowns.

He has also been dogged by off-field troubles. He was accused of violence toward women and got in trouble with a Kansas City municipal judge in 2010 for failing to complete 40 hours of community service. Rather than going to jail for incidents at Kansas City nightclubs, he was given another chance to complete the work.

In the first incident, a woman accused Johnson of striking her head inside a Kansas City blues bar. She told police that she and a friend were walking through the club when Johnson came toward them and said, "Don't touch me," as he shoved her.

Johnson eventually paid a woman $100,000 to settle the claims by her stemming from a confrontation at Club Blonde on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. Johnson allegedly spit a drink in the then-24-year-old woman's face and threatened her boyfriend. Johnson ran up a $2,300 bar tab the night of the confrontation.

Johnson played at Penn State University where his father is a defensive line coach.
