KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police said they searched a home they had surrounded in a standoff Thursday afternoon and found nobody inside.

The standoff was called off about 7:51 p.m. This was more than five hours after police surrounded the home.

The standoff began about 2:30 p.m. in the area of 53rd Street and Euclid Avenue. Police were called there by someone who said he had been in a home when he was confronted by several people with guns. The caller said he escaped, leaving the suspects inside.

When officers arrived, they saw someone outside the house and got him in a police car, but the others refused to come out.

Police are questioning the man detained outside. Police won't say if he tipped them off to the others inside, but they said they just didn't want to take any chances.

"If someone is in the state of mind where they're pulling a gun on someone or threatening someone with a weapon, we try to be as safe as possible. There's no reason for us to just rush in and get one of us hurt," Sgt. Stacey Graves said. "When someone tells us that somebody's armed inside of a residence and they've pointed the guns at them, we have to act upon that information until the very end."

Police said no one answered from inside the home but, based on the original call referring to several men inside, they were concerned there may be others still in the home with firearms so they decided not to take any chances and initiated their standoff protocol.

Police don't believe there were any hostages and never made verbal contact with anyone inside the home.

Assault squad detectives are leading the investigation.
