KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
The Wall Street Journal believes Kansas City's delicious barbecue deserves national praise, but the sports teams are putrid.
After a miserable start for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Royals finishing another year with losing record, the newspaper reported Thursday that Kansas City stands poised to jump a notch on the list of all-time stinky sports towns.
There were expectations of the first winning season in eight years and, if everything fell right, the first playoff appearance since 1985, the longest drought in the major leagues. The AL Central appeared up for grabs, and the Royals were ready to seize their opportunity.
Then reality hit: Injuries piled up before the season began, a 12-game losing streak forced them to dig out of a hole and things never got on track for some of those key young players. And the culture is one of losing.
The result was a 72-90 season and fresh promises to rebuild.
Next door to the Royals at One Arrowhead Drive, the 1-3 Chiefs also seem likely to extend their playoff-victory drought to 19 years, The Wall Street Journal reports.
As the Chiefs prepare Sunday for a match up against Baltimore, they have spent extra time this week focusing on protecting the football.
Kansas City leads the NFL with 15 turnovers, and its eight fumbles lost are double the next-worst team in the AFC. The Chiefs have a minus 13 differential, and all that wrapped together is a big reason why they've lost three of their first four games. Their only win came against the equally wretched New Orleans Saints in overtime.
Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel spent a portion of practice Wednesday focused entirely on wrapping up the ball after a particularly disastrous game last Sunday. The Chiefs turned it over six times in a 37-20 loss to San Diego.
