Parents voice concerns over school's zero-tolerance policy

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Parents are sounding off about a crackdown that has seen dozens of students tossed out of the African-Centered College Preparatory Academy.

Assistant school superintendent Ann Sanders and the principal of the school reassured parents that they remain committed to the campus and to providing a quality education.

"We have expectations of your children, but we also have expectations of your teachers to teach your children," Sanders said.

Administrators met with concerned parents Wednesday night to quell fears that the African Centered College Preparatory Academy was not a campus run amok. But for some parents, it was too little too late.

"I came back to the Kansas City School District thinking this was going to be a great experience, and it was not," parent Joy Reese said.

On Friday, a fight broke out in the main auditorium injuring a teacher. Fifty students were expelled on Monday, and on Tuesday, dozens more were turned away when they showed up not wearing school uniforms.

"They made some improvements since Friday when they had that problem. It will take a little time to work it out, but I think they can get it worked out," parent Richard Edwin said.

At the emergency parent meeting, administrators stressed their zero-tolerance behavioral policy and student-teacher criteria where students must maintain a minimum 2.35 grade point average and must come to school on their uniforms.

Teachers must also commit to providing effective instruction in the classroom.

"A student does not have the right to keep another student from getting their education. They do not have the right to do that," principal Joseph Williams III said.

Most parents thought the meeting was a good start to getting the school back on track.

"It looks like they got an action plan in place and as long as we as a community involve ourselves and stay active.  We will be all right," parent Moulana Shah said.

Administrators said they are adding two additional security officers, bringing the total of six, allowing one officer for each floor of the school.
