KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A firefighter was hurt putting out a blaze that destroyed a Northland home.

Crews were called to a home in 9900 block of North Hedges Avenue about 12:45 a.m. Thursday after a man who lived at home was outside when he saw the fire break out.

Officials say he then ran into the home and woke up the two other people who were inside sleeping.  The man suffered burns to his hand after reaching for the door knob.

The family inside the home was able to get out safely. However, a firefighter was taken to the hospital with second-degree burns on his legs. He is expected to be OK.

Authorities say the home is a total loss.
