KC district expels about 50 students after massive fight

About 50 metro students have been expelled after a massive school fight at African-Centered College Preparatory Academy.

Cell phone video captured last Friday at the school, located at 3500 E. Meyer Blvd., shows just how bad the fight was after a teacher was assaulted and taken to the hospital. Security used pepper spray on students.

The disturbance began unfolding about 1 p.m. after a student pulled a fire alarm as a way to start a fight. Kansas City police rushed to the scene.

The school's football game against East High School that night was even rescheduled for Monday.

"It is ridiculous that the kids can't get along together, and it disrupts the school," parent Michael Hopkins said.

Hopkins' son is a wide receiver for the African-Centered College Preparatory Academy Knights. He was one of the few parents able to attend Monday night's game because of the sudden schedule change.

"He loves to practice every day for the football team, but because of Friday, he couldn't even practice," the father said.

Hopkins praised the school for its strong curriculum and high standard but after last Friday, he is considering transferring his son to another district.

"I just want my kid to be in a safe environment," he said.

Local pastor and community activist John Mark was at the school Monday morning.

"It was a very calm and subdued place.  It was a good place this morning," said John Mark Clifton with Wornall Road Baptist Church.

As for the punishment, Clifton said it was definitely deserved.

"I think it is a message that needs to be sent, and I like the fact that they are doing all they need to do for the kids that want to learn," the pastor said.

The district says the students who were kicked out have the option of transferring to other schools within the Kansas City Public Schools.
