Area piano store strikes sour note for unpaid bills

Customers of a Lee's Summit piano store are warning others about the troubles they have in receiving the money they were promised.

Piersee Piano and Organ is one of the few remaining piano stores in the area, but it's striking a sour note with some customers.

A local couple said they trusted the company to sell their piano, but now they feel that the store has bilked them of $5,000.

Another family successfully sued the store for more than $13,000.

The owner admits to falling on hard financial times but said he is doing his best to make the payments.

John and Amy Hurley said they decided to sell six months ago the black Yamaha baby grand piano they received as a gift from John Hurley's parents. The store had serviced it without any problems.

"We weren't using it. Let's resell it to somebody who would enjoy it," Amy Hurley said. "Our agreement was they would resell it and they put it on the floor for around $7,000. We would get the $5,000 at the time of sell."

In June, the Hurleys learned the piano had sold. Amy Hurley said Jack Piersee told her that she would receive a $5,000 check at the end of the week. That didn't happen.

"I went to go get it, but it wasn't ready," she said. "He said, 'Actually we usually only cut checks at the end of the month.'"

That check still hasn't been cut. So they have lost a nice piano and not received any money for it.

"The bottom is that it makes us feel really frustrated," John Hurley. "We have no money."

Vienna International, a Washington-based piano company, sent two pianos and two benches to Piersee. The items were shipped with the cash due on delivery more than two years ago.

The company sued Piersee and the courts awarded Vienna International more than $13,500. The list of tax liens against the company is quite lengthy.

The Hurleys have been working with the Missouri attorney general's office in an effort to get relief without having to go to court. The store has yet to respond to the letter from the state.

The Hurleys said they are willing to work out a payment plan with Piersee or accept one of his showroom pianos valued at $5,000 as payment. But they said the owner continues to stall, which they said is ridiculous.

"Pay our money, apologize and do it promptly," John Hurley said. "And don't do it to anybody else."

Piersee told KCTV5 that "business is horrid" and he admitted to owing the money. He told KCTV5 on Friday that he would immediately write a check for half the money he owes the Hurleys and pay the rest later. He said that check could be cashed immediately.

The couple tells KCTV5 that they've yet to receive a dime.
