SMITHVILLE, MO (KCTV) -
A Smithville family was terrified this week by what police believe was a hate crime.
Smithville police are consulting with the FBI.
Someone kicked in the family's door about 10:50 p.m. Tuesday. The family wasn't home.
The suspects then spray painted racial slurs and derogatory words on the interior and exterior walls.
The family is OK and told police they have no idea why they were targeted.
The family has lived in the neighborhood for some time.
Smithville Police Chief Jason Lockridge said racially motivated crimes are unusual in Smithville, and officers hope to solve this one quickly.
