Police increase patrols after stranger-danger alert in Park Hill School District

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Park Hill School District officials alerted parents to a stranger-danger alert as Kansas City police step up patrols.

After school on Thursday, a Tiffany Ridge student was riding his bike home in the Autumn Ridge neighborhood when he noticed a white man in a white van was following him.

"The man approached him and offered him candy from a bucket," according to the news release. "The boy did the right thing by riding quickly away."

An adult called 911 on the boy's behalf.

The man was wearing a hoodie with the hood up. The boy thought the man was middle-aged.

Police urge parents to talk to their children about strangers and responding appropriately. Teachers are also speaking with students.

The Northland District notified parents via emails, text messages, Facebook, Twitter and the district's website.

Shirley Mastio said she has talked to her grandchildren about what to do if approached by a stranger.

"Be as loud as you possibly can. Scream. Yell. Don't go near the car. Take off running, jump on your bike, whatever," Mastio said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
