KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Federal investigators say they have uncovered a nationwide illegal cigarette trafficking operation that started in Kansas City.
No charges have been filed in the case, but the details are in a 101-page forfeiture list just released. It includes $2.6 million, an airplane and four semi-trucks.
It all started when investigators found "contraband" cigarettes sold in metro convenience stores back in 2009. Those are cigarettes without tax stamps.
They are investigation tracked the cigarettes to multiple states and Canada.
The ATF says more than 6.5 million packs of cigarettes were being sold with no tax stamps.
