FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -
As fall approaches, that means cold and flu season is approaching, and experts have some important tips to keep in mind.
All parents have been there before when their child walks to the breakfast table and announces, "I'm sick."
Experts at Children's Mercy Hospital said there are a few rules of thumb parents can follow when their child too sick for school.
First, watch for a fever. If it is above 100.4, they have a fever and should stay home. Some schools have a different temperature mark, so that number is good to know.
Next, keep the child home if he or she is vomiting. It is usually the sign of a stomach or intestinal infection and is often contagious. Parent should also call the pediatrician if their child vomits for more than 24 hours, vomits blood, becomes lethargic or dehydrated.
Finally, experts said mild and controllable diarrhea may not be an immediate pass from school. But, if the diarrhea is frequent, contains blood or leads to dehydration, it is probably best to have them stay home and even call the doctor.
