GLADSTONE, MO (KCTV) -
Clay County authorities have charged an ex-convict in the beating death of a longtime AT&T employee on a service call.
Bryan J. Middlemas, 35, who has a record of arrests for drugs and assault, was arrested and charged in the murder of Kevin Mashburn, who was found badly beaten inside his company truck.
Mashburn, 58, was on a service call last Wednesday at an apartment complex in Gladstone when he was brutally attacked. He was taken to North Kansas City Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The Metropolitan Major Case Squad spent the last five days following several leads in this case before arresting Middlemas late Saturday evening.
In the case police have against Middlemas, investigators say a call to the TIPS Hotline led them to him. It also shows the final call for help Mashburn made while locked inside his truck. Using an instant messaging program, Mashburn's first call for help came at 2:52 a.m.
AT&T dispatch logs show his message as, "I need you to call me an ambulance. I have been attacked." The conversation lasted a little over 30 minutes.
Mashburn says he was attacked with a flat crowbar that he was badly hurt and his head was split open. In a probable cause statement, Middlemas said he disposed of the crowbar in a nearby pond or lake.
Authorities from the area began to gather about 6 a.m. Monday so they could search for the possible murder weapon in the death of Mashburn. They are searching the Chaumiere Lake area of Kansas City, MO, which is just west of Northeast 43rd Terrace and North Cleveland Avenue.
Middlemas is charged with murder in the first degree, armed criminal action and attempted first-degree robbery. His bond has been set at $1 million and he is currently being held in the Clay County Jail. In the charges filed against him, the prosecutor is asking for the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
Middlemas' Facebook page shows he graduated from Park Hill High School in 1995.
Someone who used to hang out with Middlemas, that did not want to be identified, says he was involved in drugs like meth and marijuana when she knew him.
"Brian used to be one of those that just kind of lived buy the seat of his pants (and) was really into some heavy drugs, got into some problems," she said.
AT&T worker Keith Mashburn was slain during a service call. His employer offered a $100,000 reward and an arrest was made. A man is accused of brutally attacking and killing Mashburn during a robbery.More>>
