NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
There's a new effort to bring a killer to justice in last year's fatal shooting at the Nashville West shopping center.
It's hard to understand why a murder outside a busy shopping center could remain a mystery months later, but a young widow is hoping a new reward will help find the men who killed her husband, over a gun he offered for sale.
Lauren McLean's ring finger is now bare less than six months after she said "I Do" to her love, Joshua McLean, 30, who died Sept. 22 in a shooting just before 7 p.m. at the Nashville West shopping center.
"He loved me so much. And he loved his family and would have done anything for them. I just miss his spirit," Lauren McLean said.
It's a spirit, she said, that was full of adventure and care for others.
"We did a lot of fun outdoors kind of stuff. Hard worker, worked hard at everything. Gave everything 100 percent," Lauren McLean said.
So, with plans to start a family, Lauren said the veteran of the War in Afghanistan decided to sell some of his collector hand guns.
Police said Joshua McLean got out of his sport-utility vehicle while his brother stayed in the front passenger seat.
Joshua McLean walked to the back of the SUV where he opened the rear hatch and showed at least two men the guns. Words were reportedly exchanged between Joshua McLean and the supposed buyers when shots rang out.
Joshua McLean ran a short distance from the SUV before he collapsed from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the shooters, described only as two black men, fled in a late 1990s to early 2000s tan or champagne Buick Regal or Century
Joshua McLean and his brother were reportedly in possession of a total of six handguns. All six have been accounted for.
Police think he had met the potential buyers on Craigslist and it was not his guns used in the shooting.
Police said Joshua McLean was legally able to sell his guns in the manner he was attempting, and he had sold guns at Nashville West in the same way in the past.
"This all went down so fast. I can imagine that people were really paying attention other than 'what's that noise' and 'what's going on,'" Lauren McLean said.
While the parking lot is filled with surveillance cameras, there are only a few images of the crime.
It's been nearly six months since that day but still no arrests, so the young couple's family asks everyone to think back to what they saw that day.
"Maybe somebody saw something that they didn't think was significant," Lauren McLean said.
It could be just the clue needed to finally put Joshua's killers behind bars.
"He shouldn't be gone. He shouldn't be gone. I don't want anybody else to have to deal with the same thing that we've had to deal with," Lauren McLean said.
A $5,000 reward was offered Wednesday for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible in the young man's death.
Anyone with information on the persons involved in the shooting are urged to contact police at 862-7385 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
