Two children suffer serious injuries when hit by SUV

Posted: Updated:

Two girls out playing were rushed to the hospital after being hit by an SUV. Now, neighbors said something needs to change.

Paint marks remain on the street showing the exact spot where the two girls were hit while riding their bikes. KCTV5's Stephen Mayor spoke with neighbors who said something needs to be done to slow down traffic on the busy street.

"They are good kids, they're always running around having fun," Shammah D' Urso said.

D' Urso knows the two girls who had to be flown to area hospitals after they were hit by a car in the area of East Osage and Maple streets about 4 p.m. Friday. When medical units arrived, they immediately started performing first aid on two girls in the road.

Officials have yet to update their conditions or release their names.

The incident happened the popular Wallace Park. D' Urso said children are out in the area all the time, but heavy traffic in the area is a big concern for him.

"This is one of the only streets in Paola that doesn't have a sidewalk. We got a big park here and lots of kids running up and down this street," he said.

D' Urso said Paola is a small, tight-knit community. His daughter is in the same grade as the two girls. He said his daughter's having a tough time dealing with what happened.

"She's pretty shocked. She's young and until, you see something like that, it's hard to make it real," D' Urso said.

The family of the woman driving the SUV who hit the two girls said she's very shaken up and very sad about the situation. They said, like the rest of the town of Paola, they will be praying for the little girls.
