OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

A 4-year-old boy was out going to garage sales with his grandmother when an SUV hit him. Friday night he's in critical condition in a hospital.

Police said the boy and his grandma were walking across Montclaire Drive, heading to a garage sale when, somehow, the little boy let go of her hand and darted in front of an SUV.

The boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

It started out as a perfect day to look for bargains at a garage sale when it suddenly turned into a terrible accident just before noon at Montclaire and Ferrel drives.

Police said the little boy may have been too eager to cross the street and didn't see the danger coming. A Ford Explorer heading north struck him.

"The relative saw the vehicle coming. We believe the child in excitement broke away accidentally and was struck by the vehicle going northbound," Olathe police Sgt. Grant Allen said.

The driver of the SUV, a mother heading home with her children, immediately stopped. Police said she was very upset and worried about the little boy.

"When officers arrived, he had a head injury, was conscious, crying. He was transported very quickly because of his age and injuries and transported him to the hospital," Allen said.

Traffic accident investigators were brought out to determine if speed was a factor or if Friday's incident was just a terrible accident that could not be avoided.

Neighbors like Michael French were surprised to learn the incident happened right in front of his house. He said with two schools nearby, drivers seem to be very aware there are a lot of children in the neighborhood.

"You don't expect something like that to happen in this neighborhood, people take their time driving down the streets. People are usually very courteous. It's a quiet neighborhood," French said.

Montclaire Drive was shut down for a few hours for traffic investigators to do their work, but it has reopened.

The driver of the SUV was not hurt and police said she is cooperating fully with the investigation.
