Turning Beacon Hills neighborhood back into vibrant area

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Beacon Hills neighborhood near 22nd St. and Tracy Ave. is an older part of the city that has many empty lots and vacant homes. But it's getting a new lease on life as developers, working with the city, have transformed the neighborhood into a vibrant area with brand new housing and green space.

Those behind the project said they're just getting started with construction crews working to expand the area to accommodate heavy demand.

"Saw the location and the way the neighborhood's laid out. Love the views of the city, wanted to be part of the urban environment and this was the place for it," homeowner Randy Kietzman said.

Kietzman and his wife not only bought the land for their home, but designed the plans and oversaw the construction. They welcome news the city is looking to condemn lots at 22nd and Tracy, paving the way for more redevelopment.

"We see this as a hidden gem of Kansas City. We love downtown and wanted to be close to the restaurants. We wanted to live here and be a part of it," Jane Kietzman said.

That's a sentiment echoed by dental student Al Krebs who said the short walk to school is a big plus for him.

"With hospital row (sic) this close and this many students in the area there would be interest in housing around here," Krebs said.

KCTV5's Stephen Mayer spoke with one of the real estate companies working the area and they said they get three to four calls a day from people looking to move in. Currently, the demand far exceeds the supply.
