KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
An entire student body at a metro school is rallying behind a special student. They gave her one big surprise at this year's homecoming.
"I jumped down and I'm the winner," Alyssa Brubeck said.
Brubeck proudly wears her homecoming queen crown these days at Park Hill South High School. Her fellow students voted her homecoming queen last week.
"I was very excited," she said. "That's pretty awesome."
Brubeck is a senior at Park Hill South and she also has Down syndrome. Students there said they were excited to give her the honor.
"This is somebody that deserves it so a lot of seniors were like, 'let's vote for Alyssa' and then, when she actually made the top five, that's when we were like 'she's gonna win this,'" Samantha Boling said.
The win was not only a special moment for Brubeck, but also for her mom and dad.
"They called Alyssa's name and she jumped up about two or three times and was very excited and the crowd just went crazy, people were crying and I think dad was crying a little bit," Cindy Small, Brubeck's mother, said.
"I think it just showed how amazing our school is and how awesome our student body is and how much we really care about one person and we found an amazing person that really deserved it and she's the one that got it and she should have," Boling said.
Park Hill South beat Ruskin, 70-6, during the Homecoming game.
