KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A veteran is battling for his life after he was found beaten inside his residence, and Kansas City police are asking for the public's help.
The man lives inside a group home for veterans at Linwood Boulevard and Woodland Avenue. The manager said he had not seen the man since early Monday, so he went to his room.
The man's door was locked and he received no response. The manager kicked in the door and found the man lying on his floor, covered in blood.
Police are interviewing group home residents and friends of the man. Police are especially interested in talking to some individuals who visited the man on Monday night. Police want to know who those visitors were and the purpose of the visit.
The victim is in his mid-40s. He remains hospitalized after suffering critical injuries.
Marshall Walker told KCTV5 about finding Jonnie Royce Jackson.
"It's hard to describe. I've been in combat," he said. "It looked like he was dying. It was terrible. There was blood everywhere."
Jackson was a Marine. Walker said he and Jackson have lived in the group home for four years. Walker said Jackson had had friends over Monday night to watch the NFL game.
"I have no idea who could have done it," Walker said. "How they could have done it."
He is grief stricken that he didn't check on his friend sooner.
"I should have been here to protect him," he said.
Walker is praying for his friend's survival and that he hopes he can provide detectives much needed answers about who attacked him.
