LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (KCTV) -
The American Red Cross is providing assistance to several residents after an early morning fire in a Lee's Summit apartment building.
Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire in the 900 block of NE Ridgeview Drive just before 3 a.m. Sunday. The caller advised that the fire was in one of the top floor units and that everyone had evacuated the building.
When firefighters arrived, smoke and fire were visible on the top floor of the three-story building. The unit where the fire originated was heavily involved. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control by 3:16 a.m.
The majority of the fire was contained to the unit where it originated, but some fire spread to the attic above. The other apartments on the top floor had minor smoke damage and the units below had some water damage.
All but three units of the seven unit building were able to be reoccupied. The Red Cross is assisting the residents that were unable to return to their apartments.
The fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen area and caused heavy damage to the inside of the unit. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
