KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A 19-year-old driver is dead after an early morning crash in Kansas City.
The crash happened about 1 a.m. Saturday near Longview Road and Delmar Avenue. Police said they were working a DUI checkpoint when they saw the driver of a green 2006 Pontiac G6 acting in an erratic manner. The officers began following the driver who sped away and continued gaining speed.
"It continued on and they observed a flash in the air, which was the transformers blowing as the car crashed into the power poles," Capt. Michael Hicks said.
When the officers finally found the SUV, they saw it had crashed into several power poles, rolled over and landed on its roof and the driver was thrown from the vehicle.
The SUV was the only vehicle involved and the driver was killed on impact. The crash caused temporary power outages.
