Local shelter trying to help stray dog found badly burned

LAKE LOTAWANA, MO (KCTV) -

A stray dog found badly burned is now getting help. KCTV5 wants to warn viewers the photo of the dog is hard to look at.

The photo of Grant shows a black-and-white dog standing. A large, flaming red, open sore a couple of inches in circumference as well as another wound on his back are clearly visible. A local shelter is now working to not only heal him physically, but emotionally.

If you look into Grant's eyes, you won't see anything unusual - just typical doggy love and cuteness. But just one look at his hindquarters and it's clear he has suffered.

Erin Morse's rescue group got Grant from Kansas City's municipal shelter, a stray picked up by animal control a week ago just blocks away from the shelter.

The wounds on his body are burns.

"From what I've been told, the injuries are consistent with being set on fire or a flame-involved injury," Morse said.

The 1-year-old dog who loves to snuggle now has a temporary home he shares with a three-legged pal and a Chihuahua named Chewy who has a canine version of Down Syndrome.

Grant's name comes from an exciting milestone in Morse's organization's development.

"Grant got his name because we heard about him the day that we found out we were getting awarded our very first grant from Pawsitive Causes," she said.

Grant got a few spots shaved recently to get his wounds clean, he got lots of ointments and antibiotics at the shelter and he's all but over the skittishness he started with.

"He loves to sit on my foot. He wants part of himself to be touching me pretty much all the time. He's just a really sweet little guy, aren't you buddy?" Morse said.

It's a climb, but Grant's part way there.

Chewy is the organization's spokesmodel. He's a permanent houseguest, but the rest are temporary and all looking for forever homes.

Police are not involved at this time. The people at the shelter said there is no way to know if Grant was burned on purpose or on accident, but he will be up for adoption soon.
