KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Construction has begun on a new 228-unit apartment complex in KCK.

The project is significant because it is the first new apartment construction in Wyandotte County in 25 years. The $25 million project is on 17 acres just west of the Kansas Speedway.

"We're just down the street from the Speedway and the Legends and Sporting KC and just down from K7 and (Interstate) 435," Mayor Joe Reardon said. "It's a sweet spot here."

The Heights at Delaware Ridge has been in the works for years. Construction will take an estimated 15 months.

Reardon said the area needs quality apartments for workers. He said it is exciting to see "a project coming to fruition where we're going to fulfill that part of our strategy around housing."

The complex will have one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Prices will range from about $700 to $1,300.

Single-family and duplexes are nearby along with an elementary school but no apartments. Some workers at the Legends and other retail outlets in the area have to drive 10 miles. Supporters believe the project will fulfill a significant need.

"We've known for a long time these folks need something closer," Tom Smith of Gold Crown Properties said. "We're the first but we're not going to be the last."
