OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

The Johnson County Sheriff's Department is investigating how a stolen life-size deer statue ended up in an Olathe dumpster.

It's a stolen statue no more, as the owners of the bronze, and now broken, beauty have been found.

The statue is actually the centerpiece for the entrance to a subdivision in south Olathe. According to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, they got a call from the Springhill Police Department about a giant deer statue that was found in a dumpster early Monday morning.

When deputies arrived at the 119th and Strang Line Road location, it's exactly what they found.

Then the sheriff's office took the novel approach of posting inquiries on Facebook and Twitter, and the rightful owners were located.

It's a crime coming with a hefty price.

"The deer is estimated somewhere around $5,000, between ($5,000) and $10,000. So, it will be a felony if someone is ever caught. We anticipate that maybe someone will be caught on that, but anything over a thousand dollars, as far as theft goes, is a felony," Deputy Rick Howell said.

The investigation is still ongoing in this case, but the deer statue is expected to be returned to its owners by the end of the week.
