KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A father accidentally ran over his 2-year-old son in the family's driveway.
Benjamin "Bubbie" Kyle Thompson's devastated family grappled with constant reminders of the boy's smiling face.
"Benjamin ruled our house," Katherine Thompson said about her son. "It's going to be very hard to stay here."
The crash happened just after 8 p.m. Monday at 84th Street and Hillcrest Road, which is on Kansas City's east side. The boy was struck when his father was backing out of the driveway.
Police said there was no criminal activity involved, and the death of the toddler was just a terrible accident, as the father didn't see that his little boy got behind the truck.
The boy's mother was also in the driveway but preoccupied with finding something in another parked car while the boy's father prepared to back his truck up, police said. He checked to see mirrors but didn't see the boy who darted out. In in a split second, he was gone.
Sgt. Deetta Jacobs said the little boy would have been 3 in November.
His mother told KCTV5 about happier times.
"He loved the trampoline. He loved his dog who got him so good right before it happened," she said. "Sampson grabbed his pants and his pull ups down around his ankles and he fell on the ground. And he started yelling at the dog."
He loved SpongeBob SquarePants, he loved movies and he loved to dance with his sister. His family said he was a well-mannered little boy who cared about others.
Wanda Thompson, Bubbie's grandma, is devastated from the accident and trying to deal with the loss.
"He was my son's life, and now my son is blaming himself. He is taking it too hard," she said. "I was supposed to take him today, and I didn't. Now he is gone, and there is nothing you can do. Love your kids while you have them. He was a miracle baby."
The family said that Bubbie's aunt died the day before he was born. Tuesday would've been his late aunt's birthday.
"Please, if you got children, please make sure you look out for your kids because they could get by, and you don't even know it," his grandmother said.
The boy's parents are donating his organs.
"If two people could be saved by heart valves from my son, that's a good thing," Katherine Thompson said. "It's just the right thing to do. I'd want someone to do it for my son."
Four children will receive his heart valves and corneas.
"It gives me comfort. It means my son is a hero," his mother said.
Another grandmother, Debbie Aiman, said there are no answers but a lot of guilt.
"It's really hard for people to come up with a reason why. Everybody wants to blame themselves," she said. "It wasn't anybody's fault. It was an accident."
His grieving father is filled with guilt and blaming himself for his son's death.
Aiman urged parents to hug their children extra tight tonight.
"Give them a kiss. Life's too short. You never know what's going to happen," she said. "Cherish every moment you have with them."
She said parents should use Bubbie's death as a reminder to always keep track of their children.
The family plans to set up a fund to help pay for the boy's funeral costs. Park Lawn Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
"It's really rough," Aiman said. "He was their whole world... Life is forever changed."
His mother said she is drawing on her faith to get through this awful time.
"God blessed me in my life with him for almost three years," she said.
