KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A 19-year-old man was shot to death sitting inside his car right in front of several children.

Dozens of friends and family members stopped by the scene Sunday near 49th Street and Garfield Avenue pleading to end the violence after Maurice Carter Jr. was shot to death.

Charmin Patton heard the loud gunshots about 5:30 p.m. through her neighborhood.

"Boom, boom, boom, boom. Like a machine gun going off. It was over like 20 shots, and then I heard a car skidding off,"  Patton said.

Carter Jr. leaves a host of mourners behind, including his 2-year-old daughter and infant child. His oldest child was down near the scene of the crime until police finally brought her up to her family. The children inside the car with him were not hurt and are with family.

"It is never one person that is affected when a person is harmed. You have the person that committed the violence, the families around and the friends," the victim's father, Maurice Carter, said.

Carter said he doesn't know what his granddaughter saw, but he hopes she didn't see anything. But one thing he does know is that he has seen enough, as he now prepares to bury his son.

The victim's father knew his son was out in the streets, heading down the wrong path, but says he couldn't stop it.

"Even I couldn't reach him like I wanted to reach him. It is always the people that had the negative voice that could reach him," Carter said.

Carter is pleading with anyone else out there to learn from his family's tragedy.

"Right is right and wrong is wrong. It is as simple as that.  As long as you live wrong, this is the end result," he said.

Carter said he will always remember how much his son loved his two children.

As for his son's killer, police are looking for any leads. Authorities said the suspect's vehicle is a 2005 silver two-door car.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
