OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
Most brides dream of a beautiful gown for their big day.
But affording a dream dress that costs upwards of $2,500 is often out of the budget for military brides.
An Overland Park bridal shop is trying to change that. Belle Vogue Bridal is holding a "Gowns for Good" event. For two days, military brides can get their dresses for free.
"A lot of times they have to give up their dream day just because they have a quick deployment or do a civil ceremony," Sherelle Fernandez of Belle Vogue Bridal said. "They sacrifice so much for us. We wanted a unique way to also remember 9/11 and also give back for all their sacrifice."
Last year, 120 brides received free dresses, including Kelly Hutchison. At least 100 gowns will be given away this year and some will cost up to $2,500.
The criteria is the brides must be engaged or had a civil ceremony and planning a wedding within 18 months. The brides or their future spouses must have served in the military in the past five years and been deployed overseas.
About 75 brides have signed up so far. A few appointments are left. The event will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Appointments were also held Friday.
Fernandez said employees at the bridal shop love helping the military brides.
"A lot of times they come in and say 'we never could have afforded this any other way' and they were very thankful," she said. "This helps lift their spirits."
