Police are investigating after a woman said she was sexually assaulted on the Trolley Trail.

Officers were called to 85th Street and Troost Avenue where a woman in her 20s told them she was walking on the Trolley Trail near a retaining wall when a man wearing blue shorts and a blue shirt attacked, forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. The woman told police the man then ran from the scene.

The victim ran west to a business about a block away at 85th and Campbell streets where she asked for help.

A young man who worked at the tattoo shop where the woman showed up said it was about 2:30 p.m. when the victim banged on his shop's window, bloodied from the fight to get away from her attacker.

"She had blood on her face. She said a guy had just tried to rape her on the trail. So I grabbed the phone and immediately called 911," Drew Young said.

The young woman, who told Young she was a college student, said she was near this retaining wall, when the man grabbed her from behind, dragged her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

"The guy was telling her to shut up and she just kept fighting him, she just kept yelling and screaming and she wouldn't give up," Young said.

While the woman was running west about a block to Young's shop, it seems her attacker ran east a few blocks.

Not long after the attack, police took a person of interest into custody as he was walking near 85th Street and The Paseo. Officer Darin Snapp with the Kansas City, MO, Police Department, said the description the woman gave them matched perfectly to that of the person they took into custody.

"She did a great job of describing exactly what the guy looked like," Young said.

Police are calling that man a person of interest at this point.  Authorities have not released any information, the man's name or age and he has not yet been charged. The day after he was taken into custody, the person of interest was released because police were unable to gather sufficient evidence for the prosecutor to charge him.

The Trolley Trail is no stranger to crime.  In June of this year, a man was charged with trying to rob a woman on the Trolley Trail after she left the grocery store.

In April, James Kemp was sentenced for raping two women last year near the trail.  And in August 2010, a man grabbed a woman from behind and said he had a gun.  She was not hurt.
