The search is on for the suspect in a deadly shooting between two families holding Labor Day picnics at an Independence park.
Police are looking for 28-year-old Sergio E. Amador of Kansas City, MO, because they initially said he may have important information about the shooting at Rotary Park, located near East 23rd Street and Northern Avenue, on Monday. Now Independence police are calling him the suspect in the shooting.
Amador is 5' 9" tall, weighs 210 pounds and has brown eyes and brown hair.
Police say the shots happened about 5 p.m. after a fight broke out between the families, which were holding separate gatherings.
Now, a family still in mourning and trying to make sense of how the afternoon outing led to the tragic death of Adam B. Trent, 28, of Kansas City, MO.
"Mother woke up with yesterday with two kids and went to bed with one. Over a picnic and kids fighting. It hurts bad," Ronny Trent said.
Ronny Trent and his wife, Rachel, sit on a park bench just a few feet away from where his brother lost his life at the picnic, a picnic Ronny was supposed to attend.
"I told him I had something to do, and I wouldn't' be there. I didn't make it there and now he is dead," Ronny Trent said.
Family members say a child from another family hit one of Ronny Trent's younger relatives in the park. Words were exchanged, and Ronny Trent says someone from the other family got a gun and started shooting.
Adam Trent and his cousin were both hit, but Adam Trent got the worst of it.
"It went through his right arm, hit him in the lower part of his throat, and my brother drowned on his own blood," Ronny Trent said.
Ronny Trent says his brother's death comes as shock because he was a family man who worked hard and stayed out of trouble.
Rachel Trent remembers him as a jokester who always made her laugh even when she wasn't in a good mood.
"He kept on telling me, 'You mad at me sis? You made at me?' until I wasn't mad anymore, and I had a smile," the victim's sister-in-law said.
But there is nothing to smile about as the Trent family comes to terms with an untimely death.
"It was an uncalled for death. A stupid death," Ronny Trent said.
If anyone has any information as to where Amador may be found, they are asked to call 911 or contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477, or call the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7330 or 816-836-3600.
