KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
The Kansas City Rescue Mission has no water. That means no showers, no cooking, no drinking water and limited bathroom use.
It's the situation more than 100 men at the Kansas City Rescue Mission are facing after a water main break outside their building near 15th and Cherry streets Thursday. They temporarily got water back on Friday, but are still in need of bottled water and wet wipes.
"The impact could be pretty severe. We have 100 to 140 guys here, homeless men, on the hottest day in the past couple of weeks," Chief Development Officer with the Kansas City Rescue Mission Julie Larocco said.
The break happened around 5 p.m. Thursday, forcing the shelter to start rationing its backup supply.
"The Kansas City Rescue Mission does keep reserves for times like this. Sometimes we wonder ‘do we really need to do this?' but a day like today says ‘yes we do,'" Larocco said.
But the backup supplies are limited so Kansas City Rescue Mission is asking for the public's help by donating bottled water.
"Coming off the bus from work I was thinking about coming in for a shower and finding out there was no water was a surprise," KCRM client Steve Sachen said.
Men like Sachen were hoping to beat the heat with a cool shower at the mission, but that will have to wait until another several hours. Sachen said the shelter has done so much for him so he hopes the public can support it with water donations.
