KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A 32-year-old Kansas City man faces felony charges after firing a handgun at a law enforcement officer on Thursday, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced the following day.
Ralondo D. Wheeler faces charges of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action.
According to court records, two officers said they were working off-duty about 2 p.m., in the area of Mary Lou Williams Lane and Woodland Avenue when they observed Wheeler trespassing. When one officer tried to check on Wheeler, he took off on foot.
Court records said the officer saw Wheeler was carrying a silver handgun and then saw Wheeler shooting at him. Other witnesses saw Wheeler with a handgun and they saw Wheeler and the officer exchange gunfire.
A police spokesperson said no one was hit by the gunfire, but there was an ambulance at the scene.
Wheeler was arrested in the area of Ninth and Euclid. Prosecutors requested his bond be set at $100,000 cash.
