Renters heated after power shut off to Belton mobile home park

BELTON, MO (KCTV) -

Dealing with 97-degree weather is painful, but dealing with it without power can be miserable.

Life at the Broadmoor Gardens mobile home park in Belton was hardly a bed of roses after neighbors were inconvenienced Wednesday through no fault of their own.

"It is too hot for us without power, especially when you live in a mobile home.  It gets awful hot in there," John Weaver said.

Weaver is current on his rent, but his power was disconnected because of non-payment, which should not have happened because the cost of electricity is included in the rent.

He didn't understand why his power went out until he checked with his other neighbors. Weaver realized that all 34 of them were also affected, because they are all on the same meter.

"No notice whatsoever. They just cut our power off, and we called everybody. No one could get ahold of the mobile home owner," Cynthia Lynch said.

The property manager did not return calls to KCTV5 on Wednesday.

Residents contacted city leaders, who got involved even though it was technically out of their hands.

"Especially with the heat and these circumstances, it is really a health and safety concern," said Belton Community Development Director Jay Leipzig.

While Liepzig was on the phone with KCP&L, he was informed that the power to the mobile home park would be reconnected by Wednesday evening.

The city says the property manager likely paid all or some of the outstanding bill. Officials said they want to hold a meeting with the property manager, to talk about getting all the residents on an individual meter so they can be responsible for their own bill.
