KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
Firefighters are investigating the cause of an early morning fire at a Deffenbaugh recycling facility.
The fire call came in about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday at the facility located just east of Interstate 435 and south of Kaw Drive in Kansas City, KS.
The fire department says it was recyclables that were burning, mostly paper. There were workers at the facility at the time, and the fire department is talking to them to help determine a possible cause.
Tom Coffman, a spokesman for Deffenbaugh Industries, said at the time about six employees were at the plant working.
The fire was contained to the outside of the plant where the household recyclables are dumped after collection. No employees were injured.
Coffman said this is not a preventable problem and was likely, in his mind, a matter of a hot item smoldering that came in contact with air and started a fire.
Fire officials said the blaze caused about $1.5 million in damage. Coffman adds that clean up should be fairly quick at the $11 million facility.
