Police say surveillance video of a woman swiping money from a 10-year-old girl at a Shreveport beauty supply store resulted in a flood of tips and phone calls to the alleged perpetrator, who they say turned herself in on Monday.
The video was captured on August 11th, when the young victim went in to the A-1 Beauty Supply store in the 1800 block of North Market while her grandmother waited outside in the car. According to police, the 10 year old victim laid her money ($13.00) on the register counter in front of her while she waited her turn to pay and began playing with a fan.
While she was distracted, police say the female suspect approached the counter, eating an ice cream cone, made a purchase and while she was waiting for the clerk to return her change, she took the child's money from the counter, placed it into her purse and exited the store.
Police released that video to the media and posted it on the Caddo Crime Stoppers YouTube channel. It went viral over the weekend with over 3,700 hits. Police say it resulted in numerous tips naming Tanika Stephenson as the suspect and numerous other pieces of information, including her Facebook account with a photo.
Tanika Stephenson surrendered to police at about 10:30 Monday morning, where she revealed to investigators that she'd received a flood of phone calls all weekend, some of them not so pleasant.
She was arrested and booked into the City Jail for one count of Misdemeanor Theft.
Crime Stoppers Coordinator, Sergeant Jim Taliaferro said, "It is very refreshing to have our citizens call Crime Stoppers to identify this suspect who stole money from a child and I applaud those tipsters who declined a possible reward for their information. They thought this crime was so unconscionable, all they wanted was for the suspect to be caught; and while Crime Stoppers is elated at this latest arrest, we remind our viewers and FB followers, there are many other suspects located on our Youtube channel, www.youtube.com/caddocrimestopper who must be identified and brought to justice for the sake of other victims."
