PLATTE CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Two people are in custody Tuesday after authorities discovered components of a methamphetamine lab in Platte City.
About six miles from the main exit in Platte County there is a peaceful RV community in the woods that is away from the troubles of the big city. But Tuesday a big city problem was discovered on their grounds.
"It's just peaceful. It's nice nobody here ever bothers anybody," Basswood resident Shana Forsythe said.
The area's peacefulness is why Forsythe and her husband call the Basswood Country Inn and RV Resort, located at 15880 Interurban Rd. home for now. They came to the area from Colorado for a job.
But Tuesday morning residents saw an unusual scene.
"It's shocking because I was telling my husband this morning we leave our trucks unlocked and we leave the camper unlocked because we trust everyone out here. So it's very shocking," Forsythe said.
Chopper 5 captured video of the Platte County Narcotics unit and the Metro Meth Task Force collecting evidence of a possible meth lab.
Captain Erik Holland with the Platte County Sheriff's Department said at 6 a.m. they got a call from someone saying they spotted a vehicle associated with some stolen property. When officers went to check it out, they smelled something that led to more trouble.
"The officers that were here have had training in narcotics and meth lab and, between what they saw and odors detected, they believed it was the components of a meth lab. Not active. But as a precaution they backed off and sealed it," Holland said.
Authorities said the components were set up in a wooded area away from the campsite.
A man and a woman were taken into custody for questioning. Forsythe said she just ran into one of them in the laundry mat the day before and his remark about how nice it is to be secluded from everyone out in the area now makes sense.
"I told him I said ‘it's really nice here - quiet during the week.' And one fella said ‘I like it that way.' So I guess he did like it that way," she said.
No one with the Basswood Resort was willing to talk to KCTV5 about the discovery or how long the two people had been staying on their property.
The sheriff's department said investigators are interviewing the man and woman and, as of now, no charges have been filed. Authorities said the meth lab appeared to be for personal use only and not for a drug business.
