A Lawrence woman woke up to a terrifying sight in her own bed.
Austin Lee Whitebird made his first court appearance in Douglas County on Monday. Whitebird is accused of breaking into two homes in Lawrence and sneaking in bed with the women.
A judge appointed a public defender to Whitebird and set a bond at $40,000. Whitebird asked the judge to lower that bond, but the judge denied it.
The first victim said she was asleep in bed Saturday night when she heard someone come in through the back door. She assumed it was her boyfriend, who usually comes in late.
She said the man took off all of his clothes and got into bed and began moving behind her, but she didn't realize it wasn't her boyfriend until he spoke.
She jumped out of bed and turned the light on. She said he appeared to be impaired by alcohol or drugs when she told him to get out. While she was calling police, the man went next door.
The victim in the house next door said he climbed into her bed where she was sleeping with her child. The woman's husband was in the living room. She said Whitebird began to touch her. When she turned around and saw that it was a stranger, she screamed.
Her husband says he ran in, grabbed the intruder and they fought until the husband threw him out.
It didn't take long for police to find the suspect about a block away. Police said they arrested Whitebird, who is charged with two counts of sexual battery and two counts of aggravated burglary.
The victims say Whitebird likely got in through an unlocked door. Both victims say they had never seen him before.
Whitebird's next court appearance is set for Sept. 24.
