Gossip Facebook page causes concern in Lawrence

Posted: Updated:

Gone are the days of passing notes in the hallway at school. Now, one high school's gossip is being posted on a new Facebook page that has some students concerned.

The page is called Lawrence HS Halls. It was started on Aug. 12, has 160 friends and a picture of the school mascot. According to the Facebook page's creators, they're "a group of friends that has this page to post all of LHS's latest gossip going around the halls. If something is going on, it'll be soon posted on here."

They added "don't bother asking who we are. We will never tell haha."

"It's pretty messed up. It's really low that people would take the time to do that," student Chey Voth said.

"I think it's really pointless to take the time out to do that. Like, honestly, there's no point in it," Jenna Thomas of Lawrence said.

But pointless or not, the page is raising concern among Lawrence High School students and faculty.

"Yeah, I would be concerned about it if my name popped up on there," Briana Holmes said.

"I think it definitely should be removed and stuff because I'm sure a lot of it's not true and it's just a lot of people causing drama," Thomas said.

Communications Director for Lawrence Public Schools Julie Boyle wouldn't speak to KCTV5 about it on camera, but sent a statement late Thursday afternoon which reads in part:

"We are aware of the page. It's being monitored. We've also reported it to the school resource officer. If we receive complaints of violations of board policy and/or school rules, we will investigate those and take action as necessary."

Students said they are pleased with the proactive stance the school has taken.

"Someone could kill themselves just for what someone said and people are to going to have that on their conscience," Voth said.
