Pedestrian hit by trash truck in Douglas County

Posted: Updated:

Authorities are investigating after a pedestrian was hit by a trash truck Wednesday afternoon.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department said the pedestrian was hit about 1:45 p.m. in the 1800 block of North County Road 800, which is just south of the Clinton Lake area.

Thomas Wyrick of Topeka was driving a 2007 Kenworth trash truck registered to Honey Creek Disposal. He was westbound.

The passenger, Noah Bedell, 39, opened the side door as the truck slowed so that the workers could pick up trash.

"Noah stepped out before the truck stopped, lost his footing and fell to the ground," according to a news release from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. "It appears Noah was struck by the passenger side front duals. Noah was complaining of pain in his pelvis and back area. Noah was flown to KU by Life Star."
