A frustrated Kansas driver says the weeks of delays landed him in some trouble he couldn't avoid.
When the Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles implemented a new computer system last May, the road was a bit bumpy. Long lines and days of delays left a lot of drivers frustrated, but while the lines shrank, the problems only got bigger for some drivers.
Brett Frost says an expired registration ticket is more frustrating than any other. His vehicle registration tags expired at the end of May.
"I've been patiently waiting and patiently waiting," he said. "I've been waiting for my tags to get in the mail. I've been up to the DMV about four or five times. I repeatedly waited in line for six hours or more."
A spokesperson for the Kansas Department of Revenue says there is no need to wait in line. Drivers can mail in their registration or go online. Frost and his family say they tried that.
Frost's mother, Paula Frost, said they continuously kept getting an error message stating the computer system was down due to maintenance.
In May, many frustrated drivers took turns waiting and waiting to renew their tags. A new computer system installed that month sparked controversy.
"I just don't feel the state of Kansas has the right to charge people penalties on a mess they created," Paula Frost said.
A spokesperson says the state offered a one month grace period, waived $1 fees and asked law enforcement to also grant a grace period.
"It is frustrating me so much because it is a sticker. I wanted a sticker on the back of my car. That's all I wanted. It took so many months, not days," Brett Frost said.
The family wants the state to consider extending that grace period to three to four months.
"Obviously the problem is still there," Paula Frost said.
Frost got his registration renewed last Friday. He is hoping he can explain his situation to a judge and plans to ask for leniency. If the judge doesn't agree, the ticket will cost him $65.
A spokesperson for the Kansas Department of Revenue says while the lines were long initially, they have now returned to normal. She sent a sample of wait times including the Olathe renewal office which had a 47 minute wait. The Olathe title office had almost a two-hour wait.
